Many Hands

Many Hands

Pea Picken’

“Many hands make light work”, is a phrase coined by John Heywood in the 1500’s. I don’t know much about John, but this particular quote of his has stood the test of time.

The picture above was taken a few weeks ago. My wife, her parents, her sister, her niece, a few of our boys, and myself are all tackling the pea patch on this particular morning. It took approximately 1.5 hours to pick everything. The buckets of peas are then taken to another farm where they have a ‘pea hauler’…a machine that separates the peas from the pod. This is a great time saver.

The peas are then brought back to our place and banched. (briefly boiled in water). Then they are placed into freezer bags and then into the freezer.

It’s a lot of work. Plus, peas keep on growing. I think they were picked 3 times this spring before they stopped producing.

This week, the old pea vines were pulled from the garden. They will feed the sheep and calves over the next few days/weeks.

Anyway, in life we don’t always have an ‘extra’ hand to make the work lighter. Friends and family are not always there when we need them. But don’t let that discourage you. You never need to go through the challenges of life alone.

Watching the Pea Hauler do it’s thing.

Bags of peas all ready for the freezer.

These hands are always there for you.

Matthew 11

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
