In the 1600s, William Penn organized an agricultural show of sorts. An event where farms could meet and share their knowledge. Over the next centuries, similar agricultural gatherings took place in various locations throughout Pennsylvania. The first state-wide ‘Farm Show’ happened in Harrisburg in 1917. In 1930, the first cornerstone was laid for the complex we now know as the PA Farm Show building. Over the next decades, many additions and improvements were made. Today, the Farm Show building boasts over 10 acres under one roof. Hundreds of thousands of visitors attend Farm Show Week every January. (pa.gov)
This year’s Farm Show runs from January 4 - January 11. You can view the list of events HERE.
One of my favorite events/exhibits:
The Calving Corner. Various Pennsylvania dairy farmers are chosen to participate. Each farm has 2 days when they bring a few ‘expectant mothers’ to the Calving Corner. Visitors can observe and hopefully witness the birth of a calf.
Pennwood Farms will be taking the spotlight on Thursday and Friday. Pennwood Farms was originally located in Morgantown, PA where the present-day Pennwood Farms development is. I grew up about a mile from their farm and had the opportunity to assist with fieldwork and barn chores from time to time when I was younger. Today, many of those fields are filled with homes. Ironically, years later, I still have the opportunity to walk this ground. Not working the ground, but delivering milk to the families of Pennword Farms.
In the 90’s, the Stoltzfus family sold their Morgantown farm and relocated to central Pennsylvania.
Learn more about Pennwood Farms here. You can also monitor the Calving Corners live feed HERE.
And if you’ve never seen a calf being born…here’s a short clip from 2024.
While the Farm Show has anything and everything related to agriculture, this one has me shaking my head:) The Mullet Competition.
