Does the name Larry Shaw mean anything to you? Yeah, me neither. At least not until now. Larry Shaw is a physicist who came up with the idea of ‘Pi Day’. That’s right. 3.14 aka Pi is a number that most humans never find the need for. However, there may be a deeper underlining phenomenon here. Something more than meets the untrained eye. Thankfully, we have search engines to reveal the awe-inspiring, the deeply intriguing, and undeniably radical fact that Pi Day (3.14) is also the birthday of none other than Albert Einstein. Mr. Einstein was born on March 14, 1879. (another fact revealed by the search engine). Einstein had a ‘thing’ for numbers, and it does beg the question…why would he share a birthday with Pi? And to follow up with a second and equally curious question…who really cares?
So, Larry Shaw introduced and began celebrating Pi Day back in 1988 in San Francisco at the Exploratorium which is a science museum where he worked. Twenty-One years later, in 2009, the US House of Representatives passed legislation that made Pi Day an official national holiday. Thank you, Mr. Shaw and the US House of Representatives, for the foresight in making this great holiday a part of our American culture!!
It may be of interest to you to know that while Larry Shaw began celebrating this revered holiday, he was not the founder of Pi. And neither was Mr. Einstein. The discovery of Pi is commonly credited to the Ancient Greek mathematician, Archimedes.
And here are a few more little-known facts:
- 3.14% of sailors are pi-rates.
- The roundest knight at King Arthur’s table was Sir Cumference. He ate too much pi.
- What is the official animal of Pi Day? The pi-thon
I apologize if this is too much Pi info to digest. However, I did want you to know that beginning next week, we will begin celebrating Pi Day. Actually, we’ll be making this a two-week event! So get some pies ordered and help us celebrate this celestial holiday!
